The “Filter Belt” Across the Horizontal Sky: How Vacuum Belt Filters Achieve Continuous Solid-Liquid Separation

In industrial sectors such as mining, chemical processing, and environmental protection, solid-liquid separation is an indispensable step in numerous production processes.

In industrial sectors such as mining, chemical processing, and environmental protection, solid-liquid separation is an indispensable step in numerous production processes. The vacuum belt filter (also known as a rubber belt vacuum filter or horizontal belt vacuum filter) plays the role of an efficient “dewatering worker” in this field, featuring a horizontally arranged filtration surface and a continuously operating conveyor belt structure. Like a conveyor belt stretching out horizontally, it separates clear from turbid components in the slurry as it moves forward, driven by vacuum negative pressure.

Working Principle: Continuous Operation Driven by Vacuum Pressure

The fundamental principle of the vacuum belt filter relies on vacuum pressure as the driving force for solid-liquid separation. During operation, the suspension is evenly distributed by the feed mechanism onto a horizontally moving circular rubber belt or filter cloth. A fixed vacuum chamber is positioned beneath the rubber belt, with a sliding seal formed between them via friction belts and sealing water. Under vacuum pressure (typically 0.04-0.07 MPa), liquid from the suspension permeates through the filter medium (cloth) into the vacuum chamber for removal, while solid particles are retained on the filter cloth surface, gradually forming a filter cake.

As the belt continuously advances, the filter cake sequentially passes through washing and drying zones before being discharged at the head reversal point. After discharge, the filter cloth enters the cleaning zone for bidirectional flushing and regeneration before returning to the feed end to commence the next filtration cycle. This complete process achieves continuous automatic operation encompassing filtration, washing, dewatering, discharge, and filter cloth regeneration.

Structural Features: Modular Design and Dynamic Sealing

The vacuum belt filter exhibits distinct modular characteristics in its structure. The main body comprises a rubber belt, vacuum chamber, drive unit, feed system, washing system, filter cloth alignment device, and control system. The rubber belt serves as the critical load-bearing and conveying component, utilizing a closed-loop rubber dewatering belt with high tensile strength. A circular friction belt is positioned between the vacuum chamber and the rubber belt, sealed and lubricated with water. This design maintains high vacuum levels while minimizing friction losses in moving parts.

Belt support methods include mandrel-type sealed idlers or water film support, reducing operational resistance and extending belt lifespan. The overall structure adopts a modular design philosophy, allowing flexible assembly based on processing scale for convenient transportation and on-site installation. The vacuum drainage system offers multiple configurations—including gravity-fed (high-level drainage) and automatic drainage (zero-level drainage)—to accommodate diverse process requirements.

Performance Advantages: Efficiency, Washing, and Adaptability

Compared to other filtration equipment, the air-belt filter offers distinct performance characteristics. Its horizontal filtration surface and top-loading structure deliver high filtration efficiency and effective washing. Adjustable cake thickness ensures operational flexibility, while simultaneous double-sided filter cloth washing maintains media permeability. This equipment is particularly suitable for separating slurries with rapid settling rates, where its process advantages become especially pronounced when thorough cake washing is required. Additionally, the mother liquor and cake wash liquor can be collected separately, facilitating subsequent treatment or resource recovery.

From Desulfurization Gypsum to Bioreactor Fermentation: The Multi-Domain Application Spectrum of Vacuum Belt Filters

With its continuous operation, high processing capacity, and excellent washing efficiency, the vacuum belt filter has found widespread application across numerous industries including metallurgy, mining, chemicals, papermaking, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and environmental protection. It performs differentiated process tasks across various sectors, demonstrating strong cross-industry adaptability.

Power Plant Environmental Protection: A Critical Component in Flue Gas Desulfurization

In wet flue gas desulfurization systems at thermal power plants, belt filter presses play a central role. The gypsum slurry generated within absorption towers requires dewatering to form reusable gypsum products. These presses continuously and automatically perform filtration, washing, and dewatering operations on gypsum slurry, delivering outstanding performance in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) applications. Their high processing capacity and low filter cake moisture content enhance the quality and resource value of desulfurization byproducts.

Mining and Metallurgy: Concentrate Dewatering and Tailings Management

Concentrate dewatering and tailings dry stacking are critical processes in mineral beneficiation workflows. The vacuum belt filter effectively processes thick suspensions with high solid content, making it suitable for dewatering various mineral slurries such as iron ore, copper ore, and phosphate ore. Through vacuum filtration, it significantly reduces the moisture content of concentrate filter cakes, minimizing energy consumption for subsequent transportation and drying. In tailings management, this equipment facilitates tailings volume reduction and wastewater reuse, supporting the mining industry's green transformation.

Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries: Precision Separation and Washing Operations

The chemical and pharmaceutical sectors demand high separation precision, washing efficiency, and cleanliness from filtration equipment. Vacuum belt filters are employed in producing chemical products like fertilizers, dyes, alkalis, rare earths, and inorganic salts. Their ability to collect mother liquor and washing liquids in separate sections facilitates the separation and recovery of different components. In pharmaceuticals, these machines serve processes like fermentation liquid filtration and activated carbon decolorization. With advances in green biomanufacturing and clean fermentation techniques, their applications are expanding into biofermentation fields such as corn lactate extraction and enzyme preparation separation.

Technological Advancements: Automation and Intelligence Trends

Recent innovations in vacuum belt filters focus on new materials and components, alongside integrated automation and intelligent technologies. Control systems increasingly adopt DCS technology, enabling both on-site and remote automated control, thereby enhancing operational convenience and reliability. Environmental and energy-saving advantages have become key drivers for market growth. Research indicates that vacuum belt filters continue to advance in filtration efficiency, energy conservation, emission reduction, and operational optimization, finding widespread application in mining, chemical, and metallurgical sectors.
